On rear- and four-wheel-drive cars the propshaft is rarely one piece: it is long, and at high speed it would inevitably flex and whip. So the shaft is split in two and the joint is supported by a centre bearing — a bearing in a rubber mount bolted to the floor. It is an inconspicuous part, but when it wears the car reports it in several ways at once: a hum from below, vibration through the floor and a jolt when pulling away. Here are the signs in order, and how to tell them from the neighbouring sources.

A hum from under the centre of the floor

The first and most common sign is an even hum heard from under the middle of the car rather than from the wheels. It appears from around 50–60 km/h, grows with speed and does not go away if you coast in neutral: the shaft keeps turning, so it keeps humming.

The lane-change test separates it from wheel noise. A wheel bearing changes volume in curves — the weight transfers, the load changes. A centre bearing barely reacts to manoeuvres: its load does not depend on body roll. Vibration and a jolt when pulling away

The second group of signs comes from the rubber mount. When the rubber cracks and loses its elasticity, the shaft gains freedom to move. Vibration appears in the floor from a certain speed, along with a characteristic dull jolt or thump at the moment you pull away — the shaft has time to swing before the load presses it back into place.

A separate marker is shaking that grows noticeably under load: accelerating uphill or with the car full. Another recognisable touch is vibration that comes and goes with a particular speed band: accelerate a little further and the shaking stops although the hum remains. That is how a shaft behaves when it has lost its support but is not yet fully broken. If the failure has gone further, a metallic knock against the body joins in over bumps: the support sags and the shaft touches the undertray or the tunnel.

The last two rows are the ones most often confused with a centre bearing. If the sound changes depending on whether the engine is pulling or the car is coasting, look at the rear differential. Checking it and how the repair is decided

On a lift the part is checked by hand: take the shaft next to the support and rock it up and down and sideways. A healthy bearing gives only the springiness of the rubber; a worn one gives noticeable play and a characteristic dry rustle when turned. At the same time the mount itself is inspected: cracks, delamination and signs that the shaft has dropped are visible without instruments.

Experience says these parts are worth replacing together: the shaft comes off either way, and most of the labour is in removing and refitting it. Paying once for the disassembly is cheaper than coming back six months later for the neighbouring joint.

Two things worth asking. First, whether the shaft will be marked before it is separated so the flanges go back in the same orientation — that alone prevents most post-repair vibration. Second, whether the shaft will be balanced afterwards on a longer two-piece shaft; not every workshop offers it, and it is the difference between removing the vibration and removing only the noise.
