A squeal from under the bonnet in the first seconds after turning the key is one of the commonest sounds people bring to a workshop. Almost always its source is the accessory drive: the belt that turns the alternator, the water pump and the air conditioning compressor, along with the tensioner, idlers and pulleys of that drive. Here is why the squeal appears at start-up specifically and how to tell one cause from another without taking anything apart.
Why it squeals at the moment of starting
A squeal is the sound of slipping: the rubber belt cannot keep up with the metal pulley and rubs against it. At start-up several conditions come together at once.
First, the starter spins the crankshaft with a jerk — the load on the belt grows instantly from zero to full. Second, the alternator works at its limit in those first seconds: it is replacing the charge the battery spent on starting, and its pulley resists rotation noticeably harder than usual. Third, overnight the belt cools and stiffens while moisture condenses on the pulleys — the grip between rubber and metal gets worse.
A healthy drive survives those seconds in silence. A squeal means there is no grip in reserve: the belt is worn, the tension has slackened, or one of the driven units resists rotation more than it should.
The symptom is seasonal too. The first squeals usually appear in autumn with the night frosts, become regular in winter, and “go away by themselves” in spring. They go away only to the ear, of course: the wear that made the belt squeal at −10 °C has not gone anywhere and will show up louder next time the cold arrives.
Five typical sources
- A worn belt. The ribs wear down, the working face glazes over, cracks appear. Such a belt slips even at normal tension.
- A weak tensioner. The spring of an automatic tensioner tires over time and the belt sags. A squeal at start-up is usually the first symptom.
- Idler bearings. Here it is not the rubber that squeals but the bearing whose grease has dried out. The sound is thinner, closer to a squeak, and unconnected with alternator load — signs of a worn idler pulley.
- The alternator decoupler pulley. A pulley with a built-in one-way clutch that absorbs jerks in the belt. When worn it slips and squeals as the engine starts and stops — alternator decoupler pulley failure signs.
- The water pump. A coolant pump with a worn bearing adds a hum to the squeal and often leaves traces of coolant under the pulley — signs of a failing water pump.
Statistically the first two are most often to blame — the belt itself and its tension.

Narrowing it down without tools
First, time it. A squeal that stops within two or three seconds almost always means the belt slipping: as soon as the revs stabilise the grip is restored. A sound that lasts longer and turns into a constant squeak or hum points at a bearing — an idler, a decoupler pulley or the water pump.
Second, check the reaction to load. With the engine running, switch on main beam and the rear screen heater. If the squeal appears or grows louder, slipping is confirmed: the alternator needed more torque and the belt did not transmit it. A bearing sound does not react to electrical load.
Third, inspect the belt with the engine off: cracks across the ribs, a shiny working face and fraying at the edges are visible without removing anything.
The fourth technique is the water test, familiar to any mechanic. With the engine off, spray a little clean water onto the working face of the belt and start the engine straight away. The squeal disappeared for a couple of seconds and then came back — slipping is proven, because the water briefly changed the friction in the grooves. The sound did not change at all — the odds on a bearing cause have risen sharply. Belt dressing aerosols, however, are best avoided: they mask the symptom for a few weeks while degrading the rubber and contaminating the pulleys, after which even a new belt starts to slip.

How the repair is decided
The practical approach is to replace the belt together with the idlers: their service lives are comparable and the labour to remove the belt has already been paid for. Saving an old idler under a new belt often means a second visit within a few months. The tensioner goes the same way if its pointer sits at the end of the range.
Two things worth asking. Whether the belt part number was checked against the VIN — one engine can have versions with and without air conditioning, with different belt lengths, and the wrong length cannot be tensioned correctly. And whether the pulleys are clean: if oil or coolant killed the old belt, the leak must be fixed first, otherwise the new one repeats the story.
There is an organisational detail too: a squeal at start-up is a floating symptom, and on a warm car at the workshop it may simply not repeat. So that the diagnosis does not come down to “come back when it squeals”, turn up early on a cold engine or bring a recording. That is enough for a mechanic: inspecting the belt, checking the tensioner travel and listening to the idlers with a stethoscope takes ten to fifteen minutes, and many workshops do that check free when you book the repair.
