A whine is a tonal sound whose pitch rises with the revs. It differs from a squeal (sharper, tied to belt slipping) and from a hum (lower and steadier). Appearing under acceleration, a whine says that some rotating part is struggling under load. The task of the diagnosis is to work out which one: there are about a dozen candidates, but simple tests narrow the list to one or two in a few minutes.
The first test: engine or transmission
Before working through the parts under the bonnet, it is worth ruling out the gearbox. Park on level ground, apply the brake and raise the revs smoothly in neutral to 2500–3000.
The whine is audible while parked — the source rotates with the engine: the accessories, the timing drive or the engine’s internals. The whine only appears on the move and changes with gear or on lift-off — the gearbox, the final drive or transmission bearings are more likely.
That test takes a minute but saves hours: half of all “whining engines” turn out to be the transmission. A special case is a CVT: an even whine under acceleration is partly standard for one, but volume that grows from drive to drive is a reason to check the level and condition of the gearbox fluid. The accessories: the main suspects
If the whine reproduces while parked, start with the parts the drive belt turns.
- The alternator. Its rotor turns two or three times faster than the crankshaft, so worn alternator bearings whine first. The sound is thin and grows noticeably with the headlights and heaters on — signs of a worn alternator bearing.
- The power steering pump. It whines when short of fluid or worn: the sound changes sharply as the wheel is turned to full lock. Cars with electric assistance do not have this part — power steering whine when turning.
- Idlers and the belt tensioner. A dried-out idler bearing gives a whine that turns into grinding; the sound depends on neither the steering nor the electrical load — signs of a worn idler pulley.
- The air conditioning compressor. Checked with a button: the whine appears or grows when the a/c comes on and the candidate is found — a/c compressor clutch failure sounds.
Accessory whine has a typical progression: at first it only appears under load during acceleration, a few weeks later it is audible at any raised revs, then constantly. The earlier the sound is caught, the cheaper the repair: at the first stage one bearing or idler is usually enough, at the last the belt and neighbouring parts often suffer too. The water pump and the timing drive
Two sources are more serious. The water pump — the coolant pump: its worn bearing whines under load, and coolant weeps near the pulley. Do not drag it out — a water pump breaking up leads to engine overheating, signs of a failing water pump.
The timing chain rarely whines, but a stretched chain with worn guides gives a sound between a rustle and a whine under acceleration, coming from the front of the engine. How the diagnosis is done and what decides the repair
A whine is localised with a stethoscope, holding the probe against bearing housings with the engine running. The second technique is a brief run with the drive belt removed: if the whine has gone, the accessories are to blame; if it remains, look in the timing drive or inside the engine. Removing the belt yourself is only sensible if you understand the routing: on many engines it drives the water pump, and running without it for long is not acceptable.
Before the workshop visit it helps to prepare three facts: at what revs the whine appears, whether it reacts to the steering, the air conditioning and electrical load, and whether it is audible while parked. Those answers cut the search from an hour to ten minutes — the mechanic knows immediately which parts to listen to. If the whine only arises under load on the move, the workshop will run the car on a lift or ask for a short drive together.
Two things worth knowing before agreeing to parts. Whichever bearing is found, the belt and the idlers have comparable service lives, so replacing them together costs almost nothing extra in labour — the belt is already off. And if the water pump is the suspect and it sits in the timing drive, its replacement is scheduled with the timing kit rather than on its own, because reaching it twice means paying the same labour twice.
