Vibration at speed is the complaint people most often take to a tyre shop, and in roughly half of cases they need not have. Shake in the steering wheel, the seat or through the whole body comes from unbalanced wheels, from worn running gear parts and from brake disc run-out alike. One symptom, different parts, and a fair amount of money goes on working through the options. Simple logic sorts the versions out: each source has its own link — to speed, to braking or to bumps.

Imbalance: a narrow window of speeds

Unevenly distributed wheel mass creates a centrifugal force that grows with the square of speed. Hence the characteristic picture: everything is calm up to 60–70 km/h, then vibration appears, peaks around 90–110 km/h and may retreat slightly above that. It does not depend on load, braking or surface quality.

The location suggests the axle: front wheel imbalance goes mainly into the steering wheel, rear into the seats and floor. Extra reasons to suspect the wheels are a recent tyre change, an impact with a pothole, a lost weight or a bulge in a sidewall. Balancing is cheap, so it is sensible to do it first — but as a test of the theory, not as a universal cure.

Suspension and steering: vibration with conditions

The running gear produces vibration differently. It is either linked to bumps, or accompanied by knocks, or arrives together with a hum. Worn bushes and ball joints let the wheel wander within its play, and at certain speeds that play turns into shake in the wheel. Dead dampers do not control the oscillation, and after every pothole the car floats. Worn track rod ends add vagueness in a straight line to the vibration.

The braking row matters most: vibration exclusively when the pedal is pressed almost always means run-out or uneven thickness in a brake disc rather than the wheels or the suspension — brake judder when braking.

The order of checks

  1. The wheels first: balancing four wheels is inexpensive and closes the commonest cause.
  2. If that did not help — the lift: play in the track rod ends, ball joints and bushes, the state of the dampers and wheel bearings. How to read that play is covered in detail in a knock: steering rack or track rod ends and signs of a worn ball joint.
  3. Then the brakes: disc run-out is measured with a gauge and indirectly judged by pulsation in the pedal.
  4. Separately, note whether a hum appeared before the vibration: the sequence “hum, then vibration” is described in signs of a worn wheel bearing.

How the repair is decided

That order is not accidental: it runs from cheap to expensive and from quick to slow, and each step either solves the problem or honestly rules its cause out. Balancing is the diagnostic as much as the fix — a balancing machine shows a bent rim or a bulge that no amount of weight will cure.

Two things mechanics do not always say. After any work involving the tie rods or the arms, an alignment is compulsory, and it belongs in the budget from the start. And if a disc has run-out, ask whether it has enough thickness left to machine — below the minimum stamped on the disc, machining is not an option, and a shop that does it anyway is selling you a disc that will warp again within months.
