Engine mounts are the rubber-and-metal or fluid-filled blocks the powertrain hangs on inside the body. Their work goes unnoticed right up to the point where the rubber cracks and a hydraulic mount loses its fluid. Then the engine’s vibration, instead of being damped, comes straight into the floor and the steering wheel, and every change of load answers with a dull thump. Here is how that wear sounds and feels, and how it is told apart from transmission faults.

How it shows itself

The first thing usually noticed is a jolt when pulling away and when selecting a gear. On an automatic it is a dull thump as the selector goes from drive to reverse and back — the engine rocks noticeably and strikes the body. On a manual the same thing is felt when the clutch is released sharply.

The second symptom is vibration at idle. It reaches the steering wheel, the gear lever and the pedals, grows with the air conditioning on and changes if you raise the revs slightly. Many describe it as “the car has started shaking at traffic lights”.

The third is a knock over bumps, short and dull, from the engine bay rather than from under a wheel. A failed mount lets the engine sag and it hits its travel stop.

How to check without dismantling

Some of the checks can be done on your own driveway:

  1. Inspection. The mount’s rubber should have no cracks right through, tears or delamination; a hydraulic mount should have no oily stains.
  2. Load. With the car parked and the handbrake on, load the engine briefly and carefully in gear — healthy mounts let the engine rock a couple of centimetres, worn ones give noticeably more travel and a thump. The full procedure is in checking engine mounts under load.
  3. Observation. Have a helper watch the engine from above as you start and switch off: a jerk to one side gives away the weak link.

Do not confuse the picture with the transmission: play in the driveshaft splines gives a similar click as the drive direction changes, but it comes from the wheel rather than from the centre of the bay. How the repair is decided and how urgent it is

The first question is which mount. They are judged under load, one at a time, with drive applied against the brake — not by eye with the engine off. A workshop that names the mount and describes how it moved is answering the question.

The second is the type of mount. Many modern cars use hydraulic mounts for quietness. They cost more than plain rubber-and-metal ones and they leak with age rather than with mileage: the rubber hardens, the fluid escapes, and the mount stops damping exactly the frequency it was fitted for. Aftermarket versions vary a lot in quality, and this is precisely the case where saving on the part comes back as vibration within a season.

The urgency is medium. A car with one dead mount drives, but every impact travels further down the chain: the remaining mounts, the hoses, the driveshafts and the exhaust mountings all suffer. On front-wheel drive, excess engine movement adds work for the CV joints. The practical approach is not to rush into replacing everything, but not to leave it longer than a couple of months either, especially once the thump on selecting a gear has become distinct.
