There is a separate category of sounds that cannot be caught on a level road: the car runs quietly, but start a climb or accelerate hard and a squeal, a ringing or a crunch appears. On a long mountain pass or a motorway drag they are especially clear. That is neither an accident nor a caprice: load is a full diagnostic tool that narrows the list of suspect parts by itself.
Why load reveals a fault
When the car climbs, the engine delivers more torque, and the whole path of that torque — from the crankshaft through the clutch and gearbox to the wheels — comes under increased pressure. Worn parts are loaded to their maximum at that moment: worn splines are pressed through, joints work at the limit of their angle, the belt tries to slip on its pulley. Everything that just about held on a level road breaks loose under load — and you hear it.
The second mechanism is thermal and fuel-related. Under load the pressure and temperature in the combustion chamber rise sharply, and if the petrol does not match the engine’s compression ratio the mixture starts to ignite spontaneously. That is detonation — a bright metallic ringing, otherwise known as pinking. On a level road it is absent, because there the engine works at half effort.

The key distinction is what the sound is tied to: engine revs or road speed. It is easily checked. Accelerate to the speed at which the sound is audible and change up a gear — the revs fall, the speed stays. The sound went with the revs — look in the engine bay. Three checks you can do yourself
- The cold start test. Start the car in the morning and apply moderate throttle straight away. A belt that has lost its tension squeals specifically when cold and quietens after warm-up. The detailed breakdown is in alternator belt squeal: the causes.
- The turn-under-power test. On an empty area, turn the wheel to full lock and drive slowly in a circle with light acceleration. Crunching and chatter mean the outer constant velocity joint — the one that transmits torque to a steered wheel, checking a CV joint by driving circles.
- The fuel test. If the sound is bright and only appears at full throttle, fill up with petrol one octane rating higher at a different station and repeat the climb. Gone — the question was the fuel, as set out in pinking under acceleration.

How the repair is decided, and how urgent each case is
The criterion is which of the three tests answered, and the urgency differs sharply between them. A squealing belt is a matter of the next few weeks, and more because of the risk of it breaking than because of the sound itself; the details are in can you drive with a squealing belt. Detonation is the only case on the list where the delay is measured not in mileage but in the number of full-throttle climbs — signs of engine detonation.
Two things mechanics do not always say. If a CV joint is clicking but its boot is intact, ask whether the joint can be rebuilt with new grease and a new boot rather than replaced — on many cars it can, for a fraction of the cost. And if detonation is confirmed, ask what was actually checked besides the fuel: the knock sensor and the cooling system are the two things that let an engine detonate silently, and neither shows up on a test drive.
