“A knock in the engine” is a vague complaint: it covers light ticking, bright clicking and heavy thumps from deep in the block alike. Yet the character of the sound is the main clue. It narrows the cause to two or three versions before the car ever goes on a lift, and the difference between those versions is fundamental: one fault will calmly wait months, another finishes the engine off within a hundred kilometres. The conditions matter more than the timbre itself: the same clicking on a cold and on a hot engine means different things. So while you listen, record three parameters — engine temperature, revs and load. If the knock is hard to place in a single row, start by checking the oil level: it is free and immediately rules out several heavy scenarios. Light sounds: ticking and clicking

High, quiet sounds are usually born in the valve train — the system that opens and closes the valves. The typical sources:

  • Valve clearances. On engines with manual adjustment the clearance between the cam lobe and the valve drifts from specification over time and the valve starts to click — signs of valve clatter.

  • Direct injection injectors click as standard: it is audible from outside on almost any modern direct injection engine and is not a fault.

Bright ringing under load: detonation

If the sound resembles small coins rattling in a tin and appears on acceleration, uphill or with a loaded car, it is almost always detonation: the fuel in the cylinder burns as an explosion rather than a smooth front, and the pressure wave hammers the walls of the combustion chamber. The classic causes are petrol below the required octane rating, carbon deposits in the chambers, spark plugs of the wrong heat range, and a failed knock sensor.

Heavy knocks: bearings, pistons, scoring

A low, rapid knock that rises with revs and grows under load is a sign of worn bearings: the plain bearings the crankshaft turns in. Big end knock from the middle of the block is the most dangerous sound in an engine: a worn shell spins or the rod breaks, and the engine becomes scrap. The same heavy group includes:

  • piston knock when cold — the dull muttering of a worn piston skirt that fades as the engine warms;

  • main bearing knock — lower and less frequent than big end knock, felt at the very bottom of the block: signs of main bearing knock.

Telling these apart by ear is hard even for an experienced engine specialist, so workshops use a stethoscope and cut cylinders one at a time: when the guilty cylinder is cut, big end knock changes noticeably. At home it is enough to establish the essentials: the sound is low, rapid, grows under load and does not go with warm-up — that is sufficient to take it seriously. How the repair is decided

The gap between the top and the bottom of the table is the gap between a plug change and a rebuild, and what decides which one you are in is a handful of cheap measurements rather than opinions: oil pressure on a mechanical gauge, fault codes and cam timing offset on a scan tool, an endoscope in the bores, and a cylinder-cut test. Each of them costs a fraction of the part it rules out, and each is worth asking for by name.

Two things mechanics do not always say. With a heavy knock the car is not “nursed” to the workshop but transported: a recovery truck is in a different price league from a spun bearing, and the difference in repair cost between arriving early and arriving late is severalfold. And after any bottom-end work the engine needs a gentle running-in and an early first oil change, with the cause of the oil starvation found — otherwise the same knock returns on new parts.

Knocks that do not come from the engine

A noticeable share of “engine knocks” are born next to it. Engine mounts — the rubber-metal blocks the engine hangs on — give a single dull thump on and off the throttle when worn: signs of worn engine mounts. A quick test to separate them: if the knock is reproduced with the engine off by rocking the power unit by hand, look at the mountings and the accessories; if the sound follows the revs strictly, the source is inside the engine.

Before booking a workshop it helps to answer three questions for yourself: is the knock heard on a cold engine, a hot one or always; does it depend on revs or on road speed; does it appear under load or at idle. Those three answers save the mechanic half the diagnostic time and save you the cost of it.
