A hard winter is a stern test for any engine: in continental climates morning temperatures of −25 to −30 °C can hold for weeks. After a night like that even a healthy car starts with a concert: something squeals, something ticks, and the engine growls more coarsely than usual for the first seconds. Most of those sounds are the physics of cold rather than a fault. But frost is also the best revealer of wear: a part that was silent in summer is the first to speak up in winter. Squeal and yelp: the belt and its idlers

The commonest winter sound is a squealing yelp in the first seconds after starting. The drive belt’s rubber stiffens in the cold and the belt slips on the pulleys until friction warms it. A short squeal is a signal that the belt is ageing or the tension has slackened; a squeal lasting until warm-up means there is nothing left in reserve. Knocking and diesel clatter: thick oil and the piston group

The second most common story is an engine that knocks or clatters like a diesel for the first minutes and then runs smoothly. In frost the oil thickens several times over: the pump needs longer to force it through the galleries, and while there is no oil the hydraulic lifters tick, the chain rustles and the pistons slap in their wide cold clearances. The better the viscosity is chosen — low-viscosity 0W and 5W grades suit hard winters — the shorter that period.

The line between normal and not is duration and trend. A couple of minutes of morning ticking at −30 °C is explicable; a knock that coarsens week by week or does not go with warm-up is not. Grinding and clicking: the starter and the battery

The third group sounds before the engine catches. A single click under the bonnet and then silence is the classic flat battery: the starter solenoid clicks but there is no current left to crank. A series of rapid clicks is the same thing, the solenoid chattering on what charge remains. Grinding at start-up means the starter pinion is not engaging the flywheel ring gear properly, or the ring gear itself is worn: in frost, with thickened grease, that defect shows up sooner — the starter clicks but will not crank and a grinding noise when starting the engine.

Frost cuts a battery’s capacity almost in half, so a battery that seemed healthy in summer is the first to give up in winter. An age over four or five years and dim headlights while cranking are reasons to test it before the cold arrives.

What must not be blamed on the frost

Winter explains a great deal, but not everything. A heavy knock from the bottom of the block that persists on a warm engine is the bearings or the piston group, and frost is only the messenger here: the part is worn, and dry winter starts finish it off faster. How the decision is made

The criterion through all of this is the same and it is free: duration and trend. Write down how long the morning sound lasts, at roughly what outside temperature, and compare a month later. A sound that lasts the same number of seconds through the winter is physics; a sound that lasts longer every few weeks is wear, whatever the thermometer says.

Two things worth doing before the cold rather than during it. Check the oil viscosity against the manufacturer’s specification with an allowance for the climate — that single line closes a large share of morning ticking for the price of a scheduled oil change. And have the battery tested if it is past four years: a battery replaced in autumn costs the same as one replaced in January, minus the tow.
