A high squeal from under the bonnet almost always leads to one area — the accessory drive. There are only two candidates there: the drive belt itself, slipping on the pulleys, and the bearing in one of the idlers or units the belt runs over. The difference in cost is noticeable, and they are easy to confuse, because both sounds are high-frequency and both come from the same place. The good news is that they appear in different conditions, and by those the diagnosis is made almost without error.
The belt: a squeal from slipping
The belt squeals when it cannot transmit the effort and slips on a pulley. So the sound is tied not to engine speed as such but to the moment of load. Hence its typical portrait:
- a sharp squeal in the first seconds after starting, especially in frost;
- a squeal the moment the air conditioning engages — the compressor loads the drive abruptly;
- a squeal on a sharp throttle opening and with the headlights and heaters on, when the alternator draws maximum current;
- worse in damp weather and after a wash.
Between those episodes the belt is silent. There are three causes of slipping: worn grooves and cracks in the belt itself, a sagged tensioner, and fluids reaching the working face. The bearing: a whine tied to revs
A bearing behaves in the opposite way: it is indifferent to the load on the drive but follows engine speed strictly. The sound is even and continuous, audible at idle and on the move, rising smoothly as the revs come up and falling the same way. Switching on the air conditioning or the headlights does not affect it — signs of a worn idler pulley.

The last row of the table is the decisive check. With the engine off, the belt is removed by slackening the tensioner and each idler is turned by hand in turn. A healthy one spins for a long time in silence; a sick one feels rough, rustles or has play across its axis.
Why it is worth telling them apart precisely
Replacing the belt without replacing a sick idler achieves nothing: the squeal is back the next day, and with it the suspicion that the workshop cheated. The opposite mistake costs money too — replacing a set of idlers when the belt and correct tension would have done.
The logic of the check is the same as in other paired forks: first separate the sounds by the conditions in which they appear, then confirm by hand. The same approach is used for a hum at speed in humming: gearbox or wheel bearing and for clicking in a turn in clicking: CV joint or brakes.
How the repair is decided
If the belt is already a few years old, it makes sense to replace it together with the idlers in one go — getting back to the drive a second time costs more than the difference in parts. While it is apart, ask for the pulleys to be inspected too: worn grooves and a crankshaft pulley running out of true eat the life of a new belt within months, and then the squeal comes back through no fault of the workshop. The inspection takes minutes and is usually included in the labour.
Two things mechanics do not always say. The tensioner is a consumable with the same service life as the belt, and its spring is what actually holds the tension — a quote listing only the belt is a quote that comes back. And if there is oil or coolant on the pulleys, the leak has to be fixed first: a new belt on contaminated pulleys repeats the story within days, as covered in squealing after a belt change.
