A squeal when the wheel is turned to full lock has a very characteristic handwriting: it appears with the wheels at their extreme position, and easing the wheel back quietens it. Almost always it is the voice of the power steering: at the extreme point the pressure in the system is at its maximum, and any weak link — the belt, the pump, the fluid — starts to shout. Here are the causes by frequency and the simple checks under the bonnet.
Why it squeals at the stop
Hydraulic power steering is simple: a pump driven by the engine belt circulates fluid and helps turn the wheels. Until the wheel reaches the end of its travel, the pressure is moderate. At full lock the rack piston meets its stop, the relief valve dumps the excess pressure, and the load on the pump jumps to its maximum. From there, two scenarios: either the belt cannot cope with the increased resistance and slips on the pulley — a rubbery squeal — or a worn pump whines by itself. A short quiet squeak at the stop is the working sound of the valve and is present on healthy cars too. A loud squeal is already a symptom.
On cars with electric power steering there is no hydraulics, and there is nothing to squeal at full lock: a similar sound there means a problem with the accessory drive belt rather than the steering assistance — electric power steering fault signs.

The belt leads the list. Over time it stretches, wears in the grooves and stiffens; at full lock, when the pump needs maximum torque, the belt breaks into slipping. Finding the cause in five minutes under the bonnet
- Check the power steering reservoir. The level between the marks, the fluid clear, no burnt smell and no foam. Foam is a sign of air being drawn in: the pump whips the fluid and squeals.
- Inspect the belt. Cracks across the ribs, a shiny glazed surface, traces of oil — any of those means replacement. Check the tensioner at the same time: a weak idler gives a squeal with a healthy belt, a squeal: the belt or an idler bearing.
- Listen to the pump. If the hum is there on any turn and becomes a whine at full lock, the pump is worn — the detailed case is in power steering whine when turning. If the squeal comes with a knock or play in the steering, that is no longer hydraulics but steering mechanics: the joints are checked separately, and their signs are in signs of worn track rod ends.
How the repair is decided
The order pays to run from cheap to expensive: first the fluid level, then the belt with its tensioner, and only then a verdict on the pump. Asking a workshop to replace the pump without checking the belt is a classic way of paying five times more than necessary.
Two things mechanics do not always say. If the fluid is dark or smells burnt, replacing the pump without flushing the system sends the same contamination straight through the new one — ask what happens to the fluid and the reservoir filter. And if the level keeps falling, the leak has to be found before anything is replaced: a fresh pump fed by a system that drains itself repeats the failure.
When the squeal is a reason to stop
A squeal by itself will not immobilise the car, but two scenarios call for a quick reaction. First: the fluid level falls time after time — the system is leaking, and one day the steering will suddenly go heavy on the move. Second: on many cars the belt turns not only the power steering pump but also the alternator and the water pump; breaking it on the road means a flat battery and a risk of overheating, so a cracked belt is replaced without waiting for it to snap — can you drive with a squealing belt.
