The car stood for a week at an airport car park or a month outside — and at the first start the engine greets its owner with a knock that was not there before. A few seconds later the sound goes and the engine runs as though nothing happened. A familiar scenario and almost always explicable: while the car stood, the oil left the top of the engine, and for the first revolutions some parts run without lubrication. The only question is whether your case falls within normal — and there are clear markers for that.
What happens while the car stands
While the engine runs, the oil pump drives oil through the galleries to every friction pair. After it stops, the pump stops and the oil slowly drains into the sump under gravity — out of the lifters, the chain tensioner, the cam phasers, off the camshafts. Overnight not much goes; in a week or two almost all of it does.
The first start after standing is a few revolutions run dry: the pump has to fill the galleries and build pressure again. That is when the knock is born. The longer the car stood, the colder it is outside and the worse the oil and filter, the longer the pause before silence.
Who knocks in the first seconds

Hydraulic lifters without oil tick, and they are the most common and most harmless participant — hydraulic lifters ticking when cold. A chain tensioner without pressure does not hold the chain taut and it slaps the guides — signs of a failing timing chain tensioner. Cam phasers rattle until they fill — cam phaser rattle when cold. All three go quiet as soon as the pressure rises.
A heavy dull knock from the bottom of the block that does not clear within seconds is a different league: that is how crankshaft bearings knock, and dry starts are the most destructive thing for them — signs of main bearing knock.
Normal or fault: three questions
The first question is after how long a stand. A knock after two weeks parked is explicable; the same knock every morning is not, and that is a reason to check the oil, the filter and the lifters.
The second is how long it lasts. Two or three seconds is acceptable; ten or more, or a sound that only clears with warm-up, means looking further.
The third is its character. Ticking and rustling from above are the standard participants in a dry start; dull thumps from below are not. Reducing dry starts
The practical measures are simple and cheap. The main one is a quality oil filter: its anti-drainback valve keeps oil in the galleries while the car stands. On cheap filters that valve stiffens within months and the engine starts dry every morning. The second measure is seasonal viscosity: oil that is too thick in winter takes painfully long to reach the top of the engine. The third is to let the starter turn the engine for a couple of seconds without firing before the first start after a long stand, so the pump begins building pressure before combustion starts.
If the knock at start-up survives all of that, the next steps are replacing the lifters or the timing kit — and both are decided by measurement rather than by ear, so ask what was measured before agreeing to either.
